This three-day retreat transports guests into the spiritual heart of Japan, where ancient rituals, mountain paths, and temple life converge. Begin with an immersive overnight stay at Mt. Koya, a revered Buddhist enclave and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Participate in morning prayer with monks, savor seasonal shōjin ryōri cuisine, and visit Okunoin Cemetery by lantern light. Continue to the Kii Peninsula to walk a serene section of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route, surrounded by cedar forests and quiet shrines. Ideal for wellness travelers, spiritual seekers, or anyone yearning for introspection, nature, and simplicity.

Day 1 – Arrival in Mt. Koya & Sacred Stillness
Meet your guide at Osaka or Wakayama and travel to Mt. Koya via private car or scenic train and cable car. Arrive at your temple lodging (shukubo) and enjoy a welcome tea and orientation. Explore key sites including Kongobu-ji Temple and the peaceful Danjo Garan complex. In the evening, experience a lantern-lit walk through Okunoin Cemetery, Japan’s most sacred burial ground. Dinner is a beautifully prepared vegetarian shōjin ryōri meal.
Overnight: Shukubo lodging at Eko-in or Shojoshin-in (private guest room)

Day 2 – Morning Ritual & Journey to Kumano
Rise early to join the monks for sutra chanting and meditation, followed by a vegetarian breakfast. Afterward, depart Mt. Koya and journey into the Kumano mountain region, passing through cedar forests and quiet rural towns. Check in to a traditional ryokan or onsen inn near Yunomine or Kawayu Onsen. If time allows, visit Kumano Hongu Taisha, one of the Three Grand Shrines of Kumano.
Overnight: Ryokan Adumaya or Kawayu Midoriya

Day 3 – Pilgrimage Trail Walk & Departure
Walk a scenic section of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trail with your guide. This UNESCO-registered route weaves through misty forests, stone paths, and hillside shrines — a space for contemplation and connection. Return to Osaka or Kyoto by private transfer. Optional: enjoy a final soak in the onsen before departure or extend your stay in the Kii Peninsula or Nara.
